Job Satisfaction as a predictor of Depression among Female School Teachers
Abstract
The purpose of the present research is to examine the level of job satisfaction and its association with the depression among female school teachers. Previous studies suggested that low satisfaction level about the occupation entails major pessimistic effect on the performance of management, for instance, lack of motivation, decrease in productivity, and it also have effects on the mental health of individuals. After reviewing the literature following hypotheses were formulated: (1) there would be a significant relationship between Job satisfaction and depression in the participants. (2) The facets of job satisfaction would predict the level of depression among female school teachers significantly. The sample (n= 260) was taken through random sampling technique from the secondary school teachers of government schools of Karachi, Pakistan. The age range of the participants was in between 25-45 years. The measures of Job satisfaction survey (Spector, 1994) and Goldberg Depression Scale (Goldberg, 1993) were used for data collection. Results demonstrated significant association between Job satisfaction and depression. However, different aspects of the Job satisfaction illustrate diverse impact on depression.
